The Convalescent Hospital of San Bernardo (also called Hospital de Santa Ana and popularly as Convalecientes de Santa Ana) was a health institution located in the so-called Ancha de San Bernardo street (Madrid) corner Antonio Grilo street. In the middle of the so-called University neighborhood, it was one of the first convalescent hospitals created by Bernardino de Obregón whose supervision was due to the brotherhood of Santa Ana. Its main function was to receive convalescent patients coming from other hospitals in Madrid. The building was demolished in 1846. The street of San Bernardo appears as Convalecientes de San Bernardo due to the previous existence of this hospital.
The beginnings of this hospital date back to the period of 1579 whose promoter is the friar Bernardino de Obregón. The hospital by the royal decrees of Felipe II ordering the aggregation of hospitals in the provincial capitals caused this building to be abandoned. Through the intercession of Alonso de Peralta, Royal Accountant, it was created near the Monastery of Santa Ana. The monastery was finally demolished in 1846.

We see the building from the outside. It is striking for its huge terraces and those plants that fall like vines on the facade. But what are the houses of the famous Princesa building like on the inside? We entered one of them, renovated, to check the amplitude and distribution they have.
Aurora’s house is completely renovated. It was commissioned by her own daughter’s studio, ‘Arquitectura al descubierto’. The house, 160 square meters, was so compartmentalized that many rooms seemed to be in semi-darkness. Partitions were removed and areas were enlarged, bringing light into the whole house.
Aurora tells us that she does not have to maintain the plants on the terrace, the ones that fall down the facade. Some pools were installed upstairs to collect rainwater, and gardeners are in charge of maintaining them daily.
